Ask the doctors: Skin Lightening

What is the best way to lighten skin?

Dr. Schlessinger:

This depends on what types of skin challenges are present. If lightening is needed for all over the face or in a large area, intense pulsed light treatments (using a laser-like device) may be the best choice for you. Other treatments for limited areas (or a condition known as melasma) may be medications such as Tri-Luma, a cream containing hydroquinone, as well as Retin-A and a steroid. Many women and men develop changes due to sun exposure over their faces and need treatments such as this to correct these over time. In my practice, we also perform various peels, while recommending cleansing regimens containing lighteners such as hydroquinone. These cleansing regimens include Obagi products and others such as Vivier. Lastly, we perform peels and microdermabrasions for less aggressive skin pigmentation problems.
