HA for hands
Restylane Silk is a hyaluronic acid filler designed to treat the lips and mouth. But according to investigators at Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists of New York and New Jersey, it could also be a safe and effective treatment for aging hands.
The researchers conducted a study on 25 healthy, middle-aged female patients with photoaged thinning of the hands. Patients received hand injections of Restylane Silk, with an optional second session 1 month later, and were followed for 6 months.
“The results were great,” co-investigator Bradley Bloom, M.D., an associate at the practice, tells Cosmetic Surgery Times. “However, we expected that we would see this kind of improvement with this type of hyaluronic acid.”
In their white paper, the investigators point out that the use of dermal fillers to improve the appearance of the aging hand isn’t new. However, the use of Restylane Silk offers added benefit: “It volumes the hand while hydrating, which makes the skin look better, both in volume and quality,” says Dr. Bloom and “…makes a huge difference in making the hands look younger.”

The investigators note that many women after the age of 40 have hands that tend to lose volume, causing prominence of the underlying vessels, tendons and bones, as well as contributing to an overall aging appearance.
The investigators look forward to discovering how frequently patients will truly need treatments. “There is more and more evidence that fillers promote collagen stimulation,” Dr. Bloom says. “We may find that results are longer-lasting than the duration of our study.”
